    Abstract

This study presented a stylistic analysis of Niyi Osundare’s A Villager’s Protest to investigate the social-political challenges facing Nigeria. Through a close examination of the poem’s linguistic, literary and thematic features, the paper accounts for how the poet critiques the country’s hollow political promises, corruption and social injustices. Through the use of a qualitative approach, this study employed stylistic analysis to explore the poem’s use of run-on lines, parallelism, syntactic juxtaposition, connotation, simple sentences, and a host of other literary and linguistic features to convey the poet’s message. The analysis revealed how Osundare’s poetry reflects the complexities of Nigeria's social-political realities, casting light upon issues such as succession crisis, abuse of power, lack of direction by Nigerian leaders, tribalism and marginalisation, corruption and hypocrisy, among other social-political challenges. The findings of this study demonstrate the significance of literature reflecting and shaping societal discourse on social justice, leadership and power. The study concludes that Osundare’s poetry serves as a powerful tool for social commentary and critique, offering insights into the intricacies of Nigeria's social-political challenges and the need for transformative leaders and collective actions. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the potency of Niyi Osundare's poetry as a tool for social critique and commentary, shedding light on Nigeria's complex social-political challenges and underscoring the need for transformative leadership and collective action to address these issues.
